Rating:

There are many things to admire about Tyler Perry. His ascent in the
entertainment industry is incredible, and he has used his power
effectively to give a voice to the African-American experience the same
way Woody Allen has for the Jewish experience. He gives opportunities
to young African-Americans actors and veterans such as Cicely Tyson who
would struggle to find work elsewhere. Perry is a shrewd, powerful
businessman. But he's a horrible director and mediocre writer. His
latest project "Temptation" is his worst to date. The premise not only
straddles the lines of implausibility, it's downright ridiculous. A
girl-next-door-type (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) who is married to a man she
has known since they were both 6 years old suddenly decides to have an
affair with one of her clients. She also starts to snort cocaine and
hang out in seedy nightclubs. A subplot involving actress/singer Brandy
is also dumb, and the plot twist at the end is the icing on the cake to
this mess. When the credits began rolling, the reaction in my theater
felt like a collective "Are you kidding me?" Perhaps it only makes
sense that Kim Kardashian is in this movie. Remember in algebra class
when we learned that a negative and a positive always equal a negative?
That's what the scenes between Kardashian and Smollett-Bell produce.
One can act, one can't. You do the math. Perry also needs to stop with
the pointless close-up shots and phony eye-drop tears. Although with
this flop, it's the audience members who paid $10 who should be crying.

In the opening track shot scene, several assistant directors actually appear on the fairground wearing Dr. Seuss hats. They were instructed to distract the extras into not looking at the camera and at a shirtless Ryan Gosling walking into the a circus tent. The shot was conceived by cinematographer Sean Bobbitt who wanted to have it as a way to teach the audience watching the movie. See more »

While most of the money shown taken in the bank robberies were of the correct design for the time period (the first act was set in 1997), there is a scene in the police department evidence room that shows a stack of stolen $20s. The bill on top is a redesigned $20 with the large head portrait, which was not introduced until 1998. See more »

Derek Cianfrance's The Place Beyond The Pines is a visual odyssey, if
nothing else. It is also an intense character study of three people.
And it's a good film.

The story is of Luke, a motorcycle stuntman, who quits his job after he
finds out that Romina, played by Eva Mendes, his ex-girlfriend was
pregnant and had his child. The trouble is, she married another man.
Luke is torn between his new found love for his son, and his inability
to hold a steady job. So, to take care of his 'family' Luke begins to
rob banks, along with his friend, excellently portrayed by Ben
Mendelsohn. Of course, this puts him on a collision course with Bradley
Cooper's idealistic cop.

Not wishing to ruin the plot, I won't say anymore. When I first heard
the plot, I was immediately struck by the similarities to another
excellent Ryan Gosling movie, Drive. In that film, Gosling plays a
stunt driver, who takes on a job to help his neighbor. However similar
the plot may be, the two films are complete opposites. The Place Beyond
The Pines is a character driven study of morality and legacy, while
Drive is closer to the genre of an action film. However, the two films
do have one more thing in common, they both showcase excellent Ryan
Gosling performances.

In this film, Gosling's would be father, doing what he thinks is best,
is at times aggravating and intensely emotional. It's a great
performance, and a tricky one to master. But Gosling gets it, and turns
in one of his best performances. That's not to say the other
performances aren't spectacular as well. Eva Mendes turns in some of
her best work in years, playing a woman torn between her desire to be
with Gosling, and to have a normal family life with her husband.
Bradley Cooper turns in his best work yet, playing a cop torn between
his want for justice and his powerful ambition. As mentioned above, Ben
Mendelsohn turns in some great work as does Ray Liotta. Mention must go
to newcomer Dane Dehaan, performing in some of the film's most
gut-wrenching moments.

Then of course there is the director. Derek Cianfrance's style is
completely unique, and incredibly effective. He is one director to keep
an eye on. The cinematography is excellent, especially during the
opening shot, when the camera follows Gosling from his trailer, across
a fairground, onto a motorcycle and into a giant ball where Gosling
rides around.

That's not to say the film doesn't have it's bad points. The version I
saw sagged in the end, even though it was necessary to the ending, I
still feel they could have trimmed it down. I felt myself and a couple
other audience members getting a little restless near the end.

Despite the overlong ending, the film itself was still a great
experience. A quiet moving character drama, expansive in it's scope yet
intensely personal at its core. At a Q and A at the end of the film,
Cianfrance admitted that what he really felt the film was about, was
legacy, and passing the torch from generation to generation. And I
think he is right.

Because Warner Bros. owns the rights to iconic elements of the 1939 MGM film, including the ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland, Disney was unable to use them nor any character likenesses from that particular film. This extended to the green of the Wicked Witch's skin, for which Disney used what its legal department considered a sufficiently different shade called theostein. The studio could not, however, use the signature chin mole of Margaret Hamilton's portrayal of the Wicked Witch of the West. See more »

User Review

Has its moments but outside of Sam Raimi's strong directorial efforts and Rachel Weisz's fun and wickedly sassy performance, the movie plays more like a Star Wars prequel.

Rating: 5/10

Mildly entertaining look at the origins of the characters from 'The
Wizard of Oz" has everything down pack. From great visuals to
imaginative set pieces, this film has everything. Its does not have
however a single interesting character outside of the film's main
villain and her good witch sister. Not to mention the fact that its
script is as thin as a sheet of paper and the plot reeks of a Star Wars
prequel but with out the light sabers. Its main hero Oscar Diggs
(Played by James Franco) is not interesting at all and it does not help
matters that Franco is miscast and while Oscar is supposed to be a bit
of a conman with a heart; Franco comes across more as a degenerate
deviant with his performance. While Franco is sputtering out of control
performances wise, it falls on his co-stars to pick up his slack and
one of them is Rachel Weisz, who plays the oldest witch sister Evanora,
who rules Oz with a velvet iron glove. She is manipulative and cunning
and in my mind the best thing about this film. While most of the things
in this film are mostly kids stuff, Weisz infuses her character with a
wickedly sassy seductive charm that elevates this film past most of its
problems. Her showmanship with the material is greatly appreciated,
especially when after a while; you are getting quite annoyed with most
of the characters in this movie, especially the computer generated
ones. Another actor who picks up Franco's slack is Michelle Williams,
who is very charming in a good girl kind of way and is the only actor
in the film who can hold the screen with Weisz performance wise. The
movie could have worked much better if it just had Weisz and Williams
as the leads but unfortunately, its not and we have to suffer though
Franco trying to be charming in a squirmy kind of way and suffer though
probably the movie's worse offense, which is the character of Theodora
played by Mila Kunis, who redefines the word "Miscast". Theodora is
supposed to be innocent in this film and gradually lose her innocence
to become (Spoiler) the iconic "Wicked Witch of the West".
Unfortunately, Mila comes across as interesting as a block of wood in
this film and her transformation towards the climax ends up being more
funny in a very bad sort of way than revealing. It does not help
matters that Mila looks as disinterested in her character as the
audience is and a better actor with more range could have brought more
to it.

All and all, it had its moments but its problems weight it down.

Trivia:

The role of the Secret Service director was originally written for a man. Director Antoine Fuqua persuaded Angela Bassett to audition and then had the role re-written for a woman. See more »

Goofs:

There are several shots in the movie where news TV channels display “Whitehouse” instead of “White House”. See more »

What "Die Hard 5" should have been.

Rating: 7/10

I find it ironic that Gerard Butler, a Scotsman, as disgraced Secret
Agent Mike Banning, embodies the spirit of John McClane much more than
Bruce Willis did in that last dreadful outing. If anything, Butler has
done nothing more than to cement his reputation as a bankable and
likable action hero for the new generation in this old-school action
movie. He has a commanding presence on-screen, quips wisecracks, bleeds
when it's crucial, and dispatches the bad guys in a methodical cross
between Jason Bourne and John Rambo. Not even the fine supporting cast
(Morgan Freeman, Aaron Eckhart, Angela Bassett, Robert Forster, Melissa
Leo, Dylan McDermott) can take away Butler's limelight.

Indeed, Antoine Fuqua's "Olympus Has Fallen" is not only terrific
entertainment but a terrific throwback to the pivotal 90's action
movie, the Die Hard clone – and this film ("Die Hard" in the White
House) is another reminder of why the trusted formula works, even if it
has been dormant for nearly two decades (the last good big one being
Peter Hyams' "Sudden Death").

From the moment the film's main action start, the film doesn't stop
running. The bad guys, hoo boy do they mean business. Rarely, if at
all, have I seen this much brutal collateral damage in an American
action film. Americans citizens get mowed down by bullets from ground
and air forces. The all-American (Scottish) hero represents freedom and
justice, and the bad guys represent every American's worst nightmare. I
haven't seen this much political incorrectness since "The Delta Force".
Having said that, Rick Yune surprisingly makes for an effective and
nasty villain, who is relentlessly cold, smug and procedural in his
mission, following the formula perfectly. If it ain't broke, don't fix
it.

It's fast, it's loud, it's preposterous, and yet I enjoyed every minute
of it. The film is chock-full of sensational and well-shot action
sequences/special effects, but its biggest strength is its cohesion.
From start to finish the plot moves smoothly, and you can tell who the
good guys and the bad guys are. The characters are established, their
motives clear, and that's that. The action sequences do not simply skip
to each other, they flow perfectly like a stream, thanks to crisp
editing. Simplicity is key here, and convoluted plots do not fit in the
formula (hear that, "Die Hard 5"?)

Fuqua is no stranger to action, having helmed the solid "Shooter" six
years ago. Here he ratchets up the action up to a 10 (CGI is present
but used reasonably), and he remarkably doesn't hold back on the
tension. It's no "Training Day", but it more or less hearkens back to
an Antoine Fuqua who made "The Replacement Killers". Just thrilling
fun.

Of course the plot isn't original. It's a genre picture, and what I pay
to see in a genre picture is its skillful craft and cohesive plot. This
film has both, and resurrects the Die Hard clone from the grave. Here I
thought I was getting bored of action movies. The genre is dying, you
say? Here's a solid kicker.

It sucks that they had to put up a poster of this movie with Duke
(Channing Tatum) and Joe (Bruce Willis) so grossly misleading when Duke
showed up about what 10 mins or so then dies and Joe shows up when half
of the movie is already finished, and not getting much burn at that (I
should have known, how many of Willis's recent movies has been like
this already). For an average movie goer like me (i'd like to think of
myself like that) that doesn't normally go researching(goggling stuff)
before watching a movie, I was sucked up by the poster itself expecting
a whole lot of Duke and Joe in action. In my opinion, The Rock is not a
bad actor himself but sadly he is not able to carry the movie by
himself. I believe the movie producers/marketers or whoever is
responsible for creating that misleading poster cheated people for
their money. To be honest I am not sure I would be going to watch the
movie in theater had I known I would be only getting this much, It's
one of the movies I could have waited to be available on HBOTV or on
DVD. I did like the special effects though, especially the mountain
action scenes.

Save your money. This film is a cash grab of the highest order. A truly
shallow attempt to remake a film all horror fans hold dear to their
heart.

When Sam Raimi shocked and delighted the world with Evil Dead, he did
so with the purest intentions and divine talent. Original story.
Groundbreaking gore effects. Stunning visuals. Mesmeric tension.

A masterpiece.

He did so without the desire for box office statistics, nor did he pay
shills to promote the film. He simply poured his heart and soul and
genius into something he truly loved.

This pale, insipid, vapid excuse of a "remake" is an Evil Dead film in
name only. Nothing original. Nothing enthralling. Nothing shocking.
Just……nothing.

The sooner Hollywood realizes film audiences are SICK of these types of
tepid imitations, the better. Classic and much-adored movies should be
left to age gracefully and to find audiences on their own terms, for
generations to come.

The Mona Lisa was not repainted. And if it had of been,, the copy would
be spat upon and condemned as a FAKE! Well, this FAKE is even worse.

Excellent movie for the whole family to enjoy!

Rating: 10/10

I saw this movie at a sneak preview this afternoon. This was a very
enjoyable movie for our whole family. Me and my husband sat there and
laughed frequently, being completely enthralled with the story and
graphics. Meanwhile, my daughter and my 7 year-old grandson sat with
us, and they also were laughing throughout most of the movie. It has
something for people of all ages to enjoy. It was heartwarming, and at
times, it totally pulls on your heartstrings, too. The characters were
appealing, and the type you find yourself rooting for as time goes by,
and the animals that interact with the humans frequently stole the
show! I know that some critics will have issues with some of the
fantastic creatures that are seen, and they may take issue with the
extraordinary things that The Croods are able to do physically. I knew
going into this movie that this movie was a work of fiction, though,
and therefore I was able to suspend my expectations of reality, and go
on the ride that Dreamworks wanted to take me on. I thoroughly enjoyed
myself, and took this movie for what it was – a lighthearted comedy
about a family going through changes, and how they deal with those
changes. I would definitely recommend this as a great movie to see!!

User Review

The perfect film to watch if you want to commit suicide

Rating: 3/10

The latest installment in the series of lazy spoofs, this film offers
virtually nothing to its audience, insulting their intelligence for an
hour-and-a-half with perhaps the worst collection of blatantly
uninspired and recycled gags ever put to into a film.

The horrendous excuse for a plot centers on a suburban wife (Ashley
Tisdale) and her dimwitted husband (Simon Rex) moving into a haunted
house with their possessed adopted children. From there, the film
parodies the biggest blockbusters of the last few years, but does so
without a semblance of relevance, creativity or wit.

It says a lot about the film that the only half-laughs to be had come
from Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan sharing the opening scene – an
incredibly stupid and borderline cringe-worthy, but inexplicably
entertaining chuckle at their fall from grace.

It's all downhill from there as the rest of the film plays out as a
series of unconnected set pieces seen literally hundreds of times
before. Often, such an unappealing movie is still able to salvage hope
by suiting itself for a target market, but it is hard to see any
audience group, from 15 year old to stoner, defending this abomination.

One would have to drink Lindsay under the table, smoke copious amounts
of bud with Snoop Dogg and/or Lion and snort pure tiger blood with
Charlie to even come close to drawing any semblance of enjoyment from
this disaster. An imminent sweep of this year's Razzies doesn't seem
like ironic punishment enough for one of the worst films ever made.

Extraordinary Performances by young actors

Rating: 10/10

I'm a middle-aged black man now and sometimes I wonder if young people
get it.

I was born in Richmond, VA, and I'm 1 (ONE) generation removed from
segregation.

It is because of this that I was FLOORED by the performance of these
young actors. Chadwick Boseman & Nicole Beharie did a magnificent job
portraying the grace and courage of the Robinsons.

I couldn't have done it. Boseman has an UNCANNY resemblance to Jackie,
and his performance was so visceral that it proved to me that I
couldn't have done it.

I wouldn't have had the courage to stand up to racism by NOT fighting
back. I wouldn't have had the patience to bide my time until folks
decided it was time to see me as being more than sub-human. I
absolutely wouldn't have taken the risk of playing a game while people
threatened my wife and child.

When Jackie finally got angry enough to smash his bat against a wall,
that was the ONLY thing I could relate to – then to realize he had to
go back out there because it was about MORE than just him – I was
flabbergasted by his courage.

This is more than a film about baseball. The nuances like watching
people in second class seating still turning out to support Robinson in
full-on "Sunday church service" dress was poignant to me.

This movie ain't just about Jackie.

My mom is from New York, and she was 7 years old when Jackie joined the
Dodgers. She remembers this clearly.

It's obvious why you (as I did) would take your kids to see this film
as it shows what happened and how far we've come. For me, it shows what
other people did FOR ME that I was incapable of doing for myself.

This film has some corny parts to it – like most films of this ilk, it
sanitizes some things and does tie a nice bow on some issues glossed
over in the retelling…

..that doesn't mean it's not a darned good film.

I'm pretty cynical these days. It's not often that I watch a film with
a lump in my throat the whole time. I am indebted to the young actors
who portrayed the people of my grandparents' generation with style,
class and urgency.

I will own this film when it becomes available and that date can't come
soon enough.

In a scene at an admissions computer, the operating system is clearly viewable as “Windows 7 Home Premium.” This software is illegal for business use, and lacks several features that an office would use.

User Review

I admit I liked Admission.

Rating:

The amusing Admission is the first successful comedy of the year and a
reasonable look at the admission process for an elite
college–Princeton. Tina Fey as Portia and Paul Rudd as John turn in
pleasant performances as an admissions executive and a progressive
school teacher respectively. Rudd is amiable here and usually
successful in his film career, while Fey's efforts up to now have been
mediocre (Date Night, Baby Mama).

As an Alumni Admissions interviewer for over 30 years at Georgetown
University, I find much of the story ringing true from the
overachieving candidates nurtured by ambitious parents to the
underachieving but brilliant and risky individualists. Portia must
struggle with the boxed-in role of continuing the Princeton tradition
(read stereotypes) or breaking away to push for a student who calls
himself an "autodidact" with low grades but perfect scores on
achievement tests for courses he never took.

Amid the plot's fierce applicant battle for a slot, Portia and John
dance to the usual romantic formula of disliking each other to . . .
Well, you know the drill. However, it's their reactions to the
admission process that provide the authentic tension as he has
developed students with independent minds, and she is used to the
cookie-cutter candidates who lack the passion of those independents.

Director Paul Weitz knows something about family dynamics and children
with his About a Boy, In Good Company, and Little Fockers among the
more obvious examples. Signing up Lily Tomlin to play Portia's feminist
mom was inspired; like the ubiquitous aging Alan Arkin, Tomlin should
now have plenty of work.

Admission requires no small amount of sympathy for the messy business
of growing up and getting ahead—Weitz navigates the vagaries of family
ambition well. If the double-meaning of the title seems too precious to
you, don't worry, the rest of the story is almost unambiguous.

Although Admission is mostly about applicants to an upper-tier college,
it also poses the unethical means some might employ to gain entrance.
Even Portia is not blameless, a touch I found in the film's favor while
it deals with the unreal segment of our population smart enough to be
considered for admission.
